Background

The UW-Milwaukee basketball program has experienced unprecedented levels of success since the turn of the century. The Panthers have appeared in five of the last 15 NCAA Tournaments - most recently in 2014. Throughout this span, the team has twice reached the round of 32 (2005 & 2006) and even made an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen (2005). So it’s no surprise that Panthers’ fans have come out in full force to support some of the hardwood heroes that helped make these tournament runs possible.

With that being said, the Banner Boys are playing for a lot more than just nostalgia. While the heroin epidemic has unfortunately reached every corner of the United States, it’s hard to imagine a place that has been hit harder than the Midwest. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2015 more people died of heroin overdoses in the Midwest than any other region in the United States. The Banner Boys want to change this. Should they win TBT 2017, the team is pledging $200,000 to recovery centers in the Midwest. And, even if they fall short, the team is doing important work by shining an even greater spotlight on one of the country’s most pressing issues.

GM Edward McCants decided to put this team together after stumbling across TBT 2016 while cooking in his house. He had no shortage of guys to call. Whether it be Ronald Davis, Joah Tucker or Cody Wichmann, almost every single player on this team has helped raise a Horizon League championship banner. They are hoping to raise one more in TBT 2017.
