Massenat leads Talladega Knights in Shocking Upset Over HBC Sicklerville

The Talladega Knights shocked the world on Saturday

The 15-seed Talladega Knights are paying little attention to the bracket and making a major statement in the Northeast Region.

Listening in on the Talladega Knights’ locker room on Friday night after their play-in victory over the Queens Struggle, the majority of the team did not realize that the game they had just won was a play-in game. Additionally, most had no clue who they had to go up against in less than 24 hours.

The 15-seed Knights were set to face HBC Sicklerville -- the two-seed in the Northeast Region with a roster full of talent and size. Many TBT experts considered the loaded Sicklerville team as not only a favorite in the region, but also a potential champion.

Some may use the adage “ignorance is bliss” to describe Talladega’s performance on Saturday afternoon. Drexel alum Franz Massenat led his team with 22 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds in the 80-60 upset. The Knights also received significant contributions from Novar Gadson (18p, 9r) and Samme Givens (10p, 15r).

In order to advance to the Super 16 in Atlanta next weekend, Massenat and company will be forced to win their third game in as many days; and it will be anything but easy. Lying in Talladega’s path is 7-seed Team Arkansas (University of Arkansas alumni), who was led today by 26 points from long-range threat Dusty Hannahs. Preventing Hannahs was the focal point of Coach Tony Paris’ post-game talk.

I sat down with Massenat after the victory to find out how his team was able to pull off the upset and what it will take to survive tomorrow’s matchup.
