TBT Seeks Event Manager 

The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is a nationwide, $2 million winner-takes-all tournament televised live on ESPN. To enter, General Managers put together their own teams and rely on social media voting to gain entry. In 2017, over 200 teams applied, nearly 1,000 players participated, with 11 of those participants going on to win contracts to play in the NBA. Going into its fifth year, TBT is pioneering the way fans experience their own fandom, including testing experimental rules, a “game” where fans win a part of the $2 million prize, fans helping teams to gain entry, and more.

 

The Position

 

You will be the first to hold the position of Event Manager for TBT and the third member of the Event team overall. This position requires someone with previous Event experience who can handle complex logistics, relationship development with sponsors, venues and local partners, who is personable and has a strong work ethic founded in the excitement to be a part of a growing sports property.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Overall strategy development regarding TBT as a whole, including fan involvement / contests, marketing, team selection and more
  • Venue selection / management
    • Strategic consideration of various cities and venues
    • Partnership negotiation during the selection process and beyond
  • Event execution
    • Flawless execution and a lead role for 2 of the 4 Regional events, and a major role in the televised events (Round of 16, Championship)
    • Local outreach to build awareness of the event
      • Coordination with local street teams, alumni organizations, etc. (if applicable)
      • Conceptualizing other local promotions
    • Assist Event team with additional in-game activities (i.e. fan promotions, sponsor activation, travel)
    • Oversee signage plan and implementation
  • Customer Service
    • Responding to fan and team questions regarding rules, tickets, merchandise, points / rankings, etc.
    • Merchandise fulfillment from TBT headquarters as well as on-site

 

Ideal Candidate

 

The ideal candidate for this job would be thoughtful, hard-working, experienced, and passionate about creating something new: 

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in events or sports marketing department, agency or organization
  • Demonstrated strategic capabilities (launching a new product / product line, growing an organization or entrepreneurial venture, etc.
  • Strong technology, analysis, writing, and multi-tasking (!) skills. 
  • Possess a team mindset but can also work independently
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Knowledge of the sports and basketball landscape a plus.
