We’ve seen it time and time again from Overseas Elite – a slow start puts them in an early hole, you look away for a minute or get up to grab a drink, and by the time you get back they’re up a dozen.

Such was the case Sunday, as the Matadors came out swinging. Their first-half lead grew into the teens, and the Texas Tech alumni squad just looked like the better team. But towards the end of the first half, Overseas Elite started creeping back in it and by the time the first half horn sounded, the lead for Matadors was just two.

It didn’t take long for Overseas to take control in the second half, using a 26-10 run to turn a 40-38 deficit into a 64-50 lead. They stayed in control from that point forward, keeping the Matadors out of striking distance and picking up a hard-fought 78-67 win.

The deep ball was a big part of the defending champs’ run, knocking down six of their nine second half attempts from downtown. DJ Kennedy shined for Overseas, putting up a game-high 25 points (7-14 FG) while adding six rebound and four assists.

The win send Overseas Elite to the Super 16 for the third straight year. They’ll have next weekend off, then will head to Brooklyn to square off against Tampa Bulls (South Florida alumni) July 21
