Chicago's Wintrust Arena To Host TBT's $2M Championship Week

TBT Championship Week at Wintrust Arena will include the PUMA Hoops Posterize Dunk Contest, youth basketball clinic, and celebrity player appearances; Fans can win a share of $200,000 Supporter pool.

CHICAGO – May 30, 2019 – The highest stakes basketball tournament in the world is coming to Chicago this August, as The Basketball Tournament (TBT) arrives at Wintrust Arena from August 1-6 to crown its $2 million champion.

Championship Week will commence with quarterfinal games on August 1st & 2nd between the tournament’s eight regional champions. On August 4th, the remaining four teams will compete in the semifinals to determine which two teams will face each other on August 6th for the $2 million prize.

Also on the calendar is the Puma Hoops Posterize Dunk Contest, which will take place on Friday August 2nd.  Fans will be treated to the second annual installment of the dunk contest, which features players attempting to dunk over one another. The competitors will include TBT players, dunkers selected via online submissions of their best dunk video to PUMA Hoops social media, as well as one dunker selected during ComplexCon 2019 taking place July 21-22 at McCormick Place.

"One of the things we've tapped into is the passion college basketball fans have for their former players," TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar said in a statement. "Chicago has one of the largest college alumni populations in the country, and a reputation as a passionate sports town. By the time we get down to the eight teams in Chicago, teams will find themselves just three wins away from $2 million, so we know fans at Wintrust will be treated to a version of team-oriented, high stakes basketball they’ve never seen before."

Chris Paul, nine-time NBA All-Star and co-owner of Team CP3, will be in Chicago for Championship Week. “I’m thrilled to have a team participate in this year’s tournament, which will include alumni from our CP3 grassroots program,” said Paul, current Houston Rockets and former Wake Forest University star, “This is a great tournament that gives athletes national exposure and the opportunity to compete for a grand prize in a highly-competitive environment.”

Chicago Sports Commission executive director Kara Bachman expressed enthusiasm for the move: “We are excited that TBT Is bringing Championship Week to Chicago; it is a great addition to Chicago’s diverse calendar of sporting events and creates more opportunities for fans from across the City to watch highly competitive basketball in a world-class venue.”

Opportunities to participate in the youth clinic will be open to all kids 9-14 who enter a sweepstakes by writing a brief answer to the question: “What dreams do you have for your community?” by July 15th. Those selected for the clinic will receive a custom t-shirt, lunch on clinic day, and various other prizes. Details on the clinic and sweepstakes can be found at
