Four alumni squads advance from Midwest to Brooklyn

The top-seeded Golden Eagles punched their ticket to a second straight Super 16 with two convincing wins on opening weekend. Davante’ Gardner was strong down low, scoring in double digits in both games and hitting on 12 of his 17 field-goal attempts. Darius Johnson-Odom averaged 17.5 points per game and Dwight Buycks hit seven three-point shots in the round one win for the Marquette University alumni squad , which heads to Brooklyn looking to avenge a loss to Always A Brave in the 2016 Midwest Regional Championship Game.

Purple And Black advanced to its first-ever Super 16 with two convincing wins, first over a scrappy Canton Bulldogs squad in the opening game then in a Big 12 rematch victory over Iowa State University alumni squad Hilton Magic Legends in Round 2. Jacob Pullen, Kansas State’s all-time leading scorer who led his team to NCAA tournament berths in three of his four seasons in Manhattan, averaged 19 points per game on opening weekend.

Scarlet & Gray, the Ohio State University alumni squad, proved to be as strong as advertised in dispatching both The Region and Banner Boys in double-digit victories to advance to Brooklyn. NBA veteran Jared Sullinger made his TBT debut a strong one, with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the opening-round win, and sharpshooter Jon Diebler rebounded from an uncharacteristic tough shooting day in Round 1 to lead all scorers with 21 points in the Round 2 victory.

Always A Brave took advantage of playing on its home court on opening weekend, defeating a scrappy Mid American Unity squad in Round 1 and advancing to Brooklyn with a 92-81 victory over the Fort Wayne Champs in Round 2. Marcellus Sommerville has paced the offense for the defending Midwest Regional champions at 19 points per game.

Scarlet & Gray and Always A Brave will tip off the action off the action on Saturday, July 22nd at 12:00 PM EST in Brooklyn, New York. The Golden Eagles and Purple and Black will follow at 2:00 PM EST. Both games will be televised live on ESPN. The winners will meet on Sunday, July 23rd live on ESPN for the right to advance to the semifinals
