Amundson's journeyman career leads him to Eberlein Drive

The 10-year NBA vet is looking for his first pro title

This isn’t Lou Amundson’s first rodeo.

Amundson, a 10-year NBA veteran, has played in his fair share of high-stakes basketball games. Whether it be in the Western Conference Finals with the Phoenix Suns in 2009 or fighting for a playoff spot with Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks, Amundson is used to the pressure.

The power forward out of UNLV went undrafted after five seasons with the Rebels before entering his name in the NBA draft. Though he expected to be drafted in the second round, Amundson was not picked.

Even though the chances were slim, Amundson always told himself that his goal was to play 10 seasons in the NBA, even if he had to switch teams often. With 10 teams in 10 years under his belt, Amundson carved out a serviceable NBA career as both a backup forward and starter.

Last year, Amundson played in the United States for the first time since his stint with the Knicks when he competed with The Stickmen in TBT. They eventually fell in the second round to runner-up Team Challenge ALS.

This year, he is playing with much of the same squad on Eberlein Drive. After two early victories, including one against his hometown team, Team Colorado, Eberlein Drive is looking to shock the field with a #TBT2018 championship as a seven-seed. With four other players with NBA experience on the team, Amundson will look to turn around Eberlein Drive’s early shortcomings for a chance at two million dollars.

After a shootaround 24 hours before their match up against each other, Amundson and Jimmer Fredette embraced and caught up at Talmadge L. Hill Field House. They briefly talked about some of their old experiences together.

“Wow,” Fredette said to Amundson, “You got a full NBA front court, a full NBA back court. It’s going to be hard tomorrow.”

Amundson laughed. He knows his team isn’t an underdog anymore.

I sat down with Amundson to talk about the process of being undrafted, his relationship with Carmelo Anthony and what it will take for Eberlein Drive to take down Team Fredette.
